-CLEDAT and the mystery of the abandoned village
"To live happily, live hidden"... This could have been the motto for centuries of the inhabitants of the charming village of Clédat, somewhere in the middle of nowhere and forever out of time, on the southwestern edge of the Millevaches Plateau.
Arriving from Grandsaigne or Bonnefond, the route follows a forest track, but it's perfectly passable. You then wind your way through the dense Larfeuil forest, keeping a watchful eye out for any legendary figures that might appear, as the surrounding area seems to hold many mysteries… In the middle of a clearing, nestled in aIn the verdant valley, the village suddenly appears, luminous in its enchanting setting, as if straight out of a fairy tale and dressed up like a movie set!
Dominating the nascent Corrèze valley at almost 800 meters altitude, Clédat is admirably situated and its few thatched cottages, chapel and ruined houses are scattered amidst rocky blocks as if sprung from the earth.
In 1901, Clédat still had 37 inhabitants but its isolation and remoteness from communication routes condemned it inexorably… Alas, without electricity, running water and telephone, the last inhabitants abandoned it in 1963.
At the end of the 90s, the municipalities of Grandsaigne, Bonnefond and Pradines mobilized to save the village and the creation of the dynamic association "Renaissance des vieilles pierres entre Millevaches et Monédières" was decisive in making it a tourist and cultural hub of the Millevaches Regional Natural Park.
Restoration, enhancement and animationgradually replace nostalgia and will now be the credo of the volunteers who have been working passionately to give meaning, content and future to this beautiful heritage for about twenty years.
The hiking trails, carefully maintained and marked, abound and the Larfeuil forest will gradually reveal its secrets to you: the beautiful ponds or the superb panorama of the Rocher over the Corrèze valley, with its enormous granite vein.
